Wikileaks and the Overlords of Secrecy

The Subtle Roar of Online Whistle-blowing: Jul...

"Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold." ~Leo Tolstoy

The scandal caused by the release of diplomatic cables by the website Wikileaks has revealed the lengths that supposedly democratic countries will go to conceal information. While the leaks themselves are essentially honest opinions from diplomatic circles (and little more) they do reveal the United States government machine as one reliant on the control of information. The fact that a civilian website could be targeted by the Obama regime as well as the Republican opposition suggests their fear of open government.

Who Cares About the Environment?

Thank God men cannot fly, and lay waste the sky as well as the earth. ~Henry David Thoreau

Most of you would have heard all the arguments for protecting the environment from global warming through to protection of resources such as clean water. While specific groups such as 'green' political parties work towards saving the environment it must also be asked who else (apart from these specific interest groups) cares about it. It could be argued that personalities such as Al Gore (ex-vice president and creator of 'An Inconvenient Truth') merely use the environment to keep their public profile. Most people write in some form or another in relation to their personal life and their professional life. Photo from Moonbi Ranges

Traveling back to my home town and old university town gave me a chance to 'reflect' on the idea of the 'journey'. In the entire trip I had driven around twelve hundred kilometres from Sydney to Glen Innes and back. Unlike a plane trip you have time to take in some of your surroundings especially the huge differences when driving along the spine of the Great Dividing Range along the New England Highway in New South Wales Australia. One big difference you notice when coming from the Sydney area is the sky both in the day time and at night.

Rain Rain Thank God for Rain

Australia

A green Australia needs rain. Image via Wikipedia

Well, it is supposed to be bush fire season here in Sydney but all we can get is rain. For many international readers not from Australia may think (like Britons with snow storms) that it would ruin our holidays. Not a chance. Rain in Australia is so important that we receive constant news updates on the various dam levels. I have seen town water supplies dry up and there is not sadder sight than a dried up river. Stagnant. So with the steady rains comes a beautiful green new decade.
