Slavery and other horrors are alive and well, if we give rather than take will it change this? Image via Wikipedia

As someone who has never really been that lucky in love I can understand that certain things can pull at your heart strings. For me it is probably music. When we think of falling in and out of love with someone we can all think of some song associated with it. I am writing this just after Christmas when the mood in the air is more sombre than usual and the holiday mood is getting me down. That is what made me think of some songs and of course the Beatle’s line “when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer let it be”.

So how many broken hearted people are there living in the world today? If you look at the figures then you would probably find these hurt people in the majority especially during a time of global conflict, global economic downturn (read recession and perhaps depression) an increased breakdown of the traditional family, drugs, alcohol, human trafficking and so much more. Of course when you look at all those things together you would more than likely become a pessimist. Though I think a pessimist is really someone that has had their heart broken one too many times.

I for one am an optimistic pessimist, meaning even though I have had my heart broken way too many times I will keep on getting it broken because it is worth the risk. Consider some of the problems we face these days and despite an increase in technology, wealth and connectivity we are increasingly forced to face this changing and challenging world alone. Society now dictates that individuality is key above all else. Collective action has faded much like the collective ideals of the communist revolutions. Perhaps this new year will bring a change to this.

When we look at most of the heart breaking problems I mentioned earlier you will find that a certain “togetherness” would fix or prevent many of them. I know that sounds simplistic but I will explain further. A usual cause of a family breaking apart is a lack of communication or financial problems. Because we are being forced to work more the family is sacrificed and the alternative is that the bills do not get paid and perhaps do not eat. Helping and supporting each other within a family would solve these problems even if there was a heavy workload because the communication would still be there.

Drugs and alcohol are not a new problem and have been a problem since some early humans left some fruit juice in the sun and drank it the next day realising it made them feel happier and helped them get through their day hiding under a rock from ferocious animals. This problem can either be caused by a lack of communication and community or it can cause it. I am sure most of you know how hard it is to communicate clearly under the influence of drugs or alcohol (or both!). Again heartache is a prime contributor to substance abuse and I know most of you reading this would have become drunk at least once either in or coming out of a relationship.

If we look at all of the worlds problems in a microcosm and compare them to the problems of the individual we find that it is the disenfranchisement of the human spirit that has caused all this misery. If you look at North Korea as the fat kid who smells of the international community then you would understand that as a world we could either reach out to a nation like this or the alternatives are they will sit in the corner and read books or get some guns and shoot up the school (I.e the Korean peninsula). We as developed countries need to stop acting like the spoiled rich kids that we are and face up to the choices we have.

In this new decade we can as people and nations either reinforce the barricades or we can set about changing the world with the wealth that we have. This wealth is not from our failing financial system (a relic from the passing ages) but from our understanding of what has come before us in the last century and even the last decade. If we give and give and give there would be no reason for any of us to need to take so much and we would even have a chance to mend all of those broken hearts: if only we could all agree.

Have a safe and happy 2010, and never forget to fall in love!
