The Personal and the Impersonal

As a special treat for my hungry blog I decided to discuss ‘who’ is speaking within a poem or piece of art work. The danger for artists and writers is that people usually assume that the author is the one speaking. While this may be true in some cases, mediums like poetry are often misread. Usually this is when a writer attempts to capture thoughts and feelings which may not be their own:

Writing about writing should bore the writer
The writing bears the writer
What does the writer bear?

Bear intolerance
Tolerate the intolerable

Little Points from the Poetry Book “Scents Sand Censor Billy Tea”.

This was a poem I did for the poetry book (by the way the link above gets you 45% off) earlier in the year. Only a small collection and I hope to get together a poetry and photography book soon in colour. Always have to make more work for myself! I think the previous two sentences reveal that blogging is probably a more personal a medium compared to poetry. I share more about myself blogging and using twitter (what i’m doing etc) than is evident in my poetry which usually has a background of ideas to be concentrated and flow on through themselves intertwining and enveloping the reader.
